A Quick Jaunt to Parkside Terrace and Barclay Bruntsfield

I didn't sleep quite as late as I was hoping to this morning, only 9 o'clockish, so I opted to stay in bed in my pajamas and do random things like talk to Bettine, who's still recovering from her jet lag, and go on Pinterest, and watch a few episodes of the Nanny. By the time 10:30 rolled along I felt super lazy so I got up and put some actual clothes on and around 11-11:15 I was out the door!

I first sauntered briskly walked back to the train station from which I had made my arduous journey uphill yesterday. There I bought myself a railcard. With that done at last, I headed over to Princes Street to the Vodaphone center to get my phone looked at. One new SIM card and 5 pounds of money on the phone later and I was headed back to the Pleasance. I made a right onto Bernard's Terrace, and went to the Sainsbury's. I bought a few things including some mentos, a loaf of bread, and marmalade. I proceeded back to the flat and put my stuff away, and then plugged my phone in because it had apparently died again even though it was turned off. . . I ate some lunch and by 2:20 I was getting my way again. My destination, you ask? 13 Parkside Terrace, the former residence of my dear grandpapa and grandmama and their four children sometime during the early 70s, I believe.

The cool bow window. I think this might have been a sitting room or somebody's bedroom...but I'm not sure

Preston Street Primary School, I'm pretty sure this is where my mother and uncles went to school (I don't think my aunt was old enough, but, again, I could be wrong)

The Commonwealth Pool. My mom hurt herself somehow on site when they were building this...I believe she was riding her bike

After Parkside Terrace, I made my way back down Dalkeith/St. Leonards and once again turned on to Bernard Terrace and headed to the end to the Meadows park. It is a very lovely Park with lots of old buildings filled with flats along the roads surrounding it. At the end of the park is Barclay Brunstfield (now Barclay Viewforth), the church which my mother attended and where my grandfather ended up preaching.

If you look closely at the grass on the other side of the road you can see crocuses popping up!

This is still when I hadn't turned my flash back on...and it was clouding over a bit

It's massive

So that was my day. Tomorrow I shall probably get moving a bit faster, and I hope to climb Arthur's Seat and maybe walk a bit farther up the Royal Mile and find John Knox's house...and maybe I'll find the school where my grandfather studied. Cheers!

  2. Oh Hannah, thank you, thank you for such great pictures! It's seems so hard to believe that you are walking the same streets that we did from 1969 - 71!

  3. wow!!! and the circle continues! Thank you so much. You are correct that I was too young to attend school in Scotland; but, I do remember meeting my siblings at the street corner where the "lollipop man" helped the kids across the street!
